I am pleased to announce that Dr. Andrea Webb has been appointed Director for the Institute for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISoTL), for a two-year term beginning April 1, 2026.
Dr. Webb is a Professor of Teaching in the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy in the Faculty of Education, where her work is focused on a deep and sustained commitment to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and to advancing pedagogical practices in higher education. At UBC, she leads the Faculty Certificate Program in the Scholarship of Educational Leadership.
Her scholarship includes investigation into how educational leaders navigate threshold concepts in SoTL, illuminating institutional and disciplinary factors that support or constrain scholarly teaching. She is interested in topics such as the methodological foundations of SoTL inquiry, professional development for postsecondary instructors, and the role of subjectivity and institutional culture in scholarly teaching. She participates in a variety of multinational projects, including SSHRC-funded initiatives exploring narrative art and visual storytelling in Holocaust and human rights education, work that integrates her interests in curriculum studies, social studies education, and evidence-based pedagogical design. Dr. Webb is also recognized for her leadership within national SoTL communities, serving as Chair of SoTL Canada within the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE).
The Institute for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISoTL) , a research institute established by Senate, is hosted within the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology. The Director works closely with the ISoTL team to advance the Institute’s mission of supporting research, inquiry, and reflection on teaching and learning at UBC, while ensuring the Institute remains agile in response to the evolving higher education landscape and continues to bring energy and vibrancy to ISoTL's operations and programming.
“I see SoTL as a key lever for change in higher education teaching and learning,” said Dr. Webb. “So, I am looking forward to building on the work that ISoTL has established.”
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Webb as Director of ISoTL.
