I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Bruce MacDougall as Dean pro tem for the Peter A. Allard School of Law, for a one-year term effective July 2, 2026.
Professor MacDougall has been a faculty member at the Allard School of Law since 1988 and has held the positions of Associate Dean Academic Affairs and Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Professional Programs in the past. He has taught extensively at both the J.D. and graduate level, including courses in contract law, commercial law, corporations law, and the law and sexuality. He is the past recipient of the Killam Teaching Prize. Professor MacDougall has written in all the areas in which he teaches and is the sole author of ten treatises. He has also written many legal articles and is the co-author of two other books. He contributes yearly to the publications of the Continuing Legal Education Society of B.C. His work is much cited by courts.
Professor MacDougall has served on the UBC Vancouver Senate for eight years and on the university’s Senior Appointments Committee for four years.
Professor MacDougall completed his legal studies at Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar (Maritime Provinces), and at Dalhousie University. He clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada for Justice Gerald Le Dain and practiced law in both Toronto and Vancouver. He is a member of the Bar of British Columbia. For over a dozen years he has been a member of the Judicial Council of the Tsawwassen First Nation and currently serves as Chair. In the past, he served on the executive of the Vancouver Bar Association and was also a Trustee of the Foundation for Legal Research. He has been a visiting professor and has taught courses at University of Florida, King’s College London, Chulalongkorn University, Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Universite de Sherbrooke.
Professor Ngai Pindell's term as Dean for the Allard School of Law will conclude on June 30, 2026. I would like to thank Professor Pindell for his dedicated service to the university since 2021.
I congratulate Professor MacDougall on this appointment and look forward to working with him and the Allard School of Law leadership team over the coming year.
