Dr. Robert Helsley

The Provost is pleased to announce that, on the recommendation of President Santa Ono, the Board of Governors has approved Dr. Robert Helsley’s extension of appointment as Dean of the Faculty of Commerce (Sauder School of Business) for a five-year term beginning July 1, 2017.

Under Dr. Helsley’s innovative leadership, the Faculty has continued to expand its programs and its research reputation. Some of the major accomplishments achieved under Dr. Helsley’s first term included:  increasing diversity and transparency in governance; improving the fiscal sustainability of the Faculty; attracting, retaining and supporting world-class research and teaching faculty and excellent students; introducing transformative programs and experiences for students; and providing greater support for staff.  His commitment to the importance of values and ethics in business and education has helped to foster a culture of collaboration and respect, building on current relationships and establishing new ones. 

It was noted that Dean Helsley is seen as a valued colleague among the other UBC deans. His collaborative approach in innovative programs and initiatives demonstrates his commitment to excellence at UBC. 

As the Faculty articulates its new strategic plan, grounded in excellence in research and teaching, the benefits to the social impact of business will be felt widely, further increasing the school’s reputation as a world-class Business School.

The Provost would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the President’s Advisory Committee for their time and commitment, and for its deliberations that culminated in the unanimous recommendation to the President that Dr. Helsley be extended for a second term.
