Visit to UBC by Trinity College Dublin, July 10, 2017
On July 10, 2017 UBC hosted a delegation from Trinity College Dublin, led by Provost & President Prof. Patrick Prendergast. The delegation was hosted by Dr. Louise Cowin (Vice President, Students) and the UBC International Office. UBC and Trinity College signed a student mobility agreement, and discussed ongoing initiatives linking researchers at the two universities.
On June 22, 2017 UBC hosted Dr. Prachi Kaul (Director) and Prof. Suchorita Chattopadhyay (outgoing President) from the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute in New Delhi, India. Dr. Kaul and Prof. Chattopadhyay met with Prof. Pam Ratner (Vice Provost, International), as well as UBC's International Office and scholars from UBC's Centre for India and South Asia Research (CISAR).
UBC was a founding member of the Shastri Institute back in 1968 and is a long standing participant in the Institute's programming.
On June 13, 2017 UBC hosted H.E. Mr. Vikas Swarup, High Commissioner of India to Canada. High Commissioner Swarup met with President Santa Ono to discuss UBC's engagement with India, in particular, the IC-IMPACTS Centre of Excellence.
On May 31, 2017 UBC hosted a delegation representing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) led by H.E. Secretary Le Luong Minh. Secretary Minh met with Prof. Pam Ratner (Vice Provost, International), as well as UBC Southeast Asia scholars, to dicuss UBC's engagement and research in the region.
On May 29, 2017 UBC hosted a presidential delegation from Sun Yat Sen University (SYSU) in Guangzhou, China. UBC has had a formal partnership with SYSU since 2014. SYSU President Prof. Jun LUO and his colleagues met with Prof. Pam Ratner (Vice Provost, International) as well as with representatives of UBC's Faculty of Medicine, with whom they discussed future collaboration opportunities.
On March 31, 2017 UBC hosted a high level delegation from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) led by Chairperson Dr. Pascale Ehrenfreund. More information about the visit can be found on the UBC Applied Science website here.
On February 21, 2017 UBC hosted H.E. Mr. Ian Burney, Canadian Ambassador to Japan. Ambassador Burney met with President Santa J. Ono to discuss UBC's engagement in Japan and new education & research opportunities in that country. Ambassador Burney also met with Japanese scholars at UBC's Institute for Asian Research and visited UBC's Brock Commons, the tallest mass timber building in the world.
On February 3, 2017 UBC hosted a presidential delegation from the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) in Japan. NAIST President Prof. Naotake Ogasawara and his colleagues met with Prof. Helen Burt (UBC Vice President, Research) and Prof. Simon Peacock (Dean, Faculty of Science) to sign an agreement launching an international joint lab in Botany. The Japanese Consul General in Vancouver, Ms. Asako Okai also attended the signing ceremony and expressed her pleasure at this new initiative between two top Japanese and Canadian research institutions.
On January 10, 2017 UBC hosted a delegation from the University of Central Asia, led by Chairman Shamsh Kassim-Lakha. Chairman Kassim-Lakha met with President Santa J. Ono to sign an agreement to collaborate in earth and environmental sciences. More about the UBC-UCA partnership can be found here.
On November 17, 2016 UBC hosted a delegation from the Technical University of Darmstadt (Germany), led by President Prof. Hans Jürgen Prömel. Prof. Prömel met with President Santa J. Ono to discuss growing the current collaborations between the two universities. The delegation also visited TRIUMF, where they signed a Memorandum of Understanding to further the two-way flow of researchers.
On November 7, 2016 UBC hosted a delegation from SUSTECH, led by President Chen Shiyi. Prof. Chen met with President Santa J. Ono to sign a collaboration agreement. The delegation also visited key researchers and institutes in the Faculty of Science, including the China-Canada Joint Centre for Bioenergy Research and Innovation.
On October 20, 2016 UBC hosted a delegation from the University of Exeter, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Sir Steve Smith. Sir Steve met with Prof. Helen Burt (Vice President Research and International) and signed two institutional agreements to promote student mobility and collaboration with UBC's Museum of Anthropology.
On October 11, 2016 UBC hosted a delegation from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), led by President Anders Bjarklev. Prof. Bjarklev visited campus to sign a strategic partnership agreement with UBC President Santa Ono. The delegation also met their counterparts from UBC's Faculties' of Applied Science, Land & Food Systems, and Science to discuss ways to grow current student mobility and research collaboration, and how to build on the new cross-campus agreement.
On August 10, 2016 UBC welcomed to campus a delegation led by Tsinghua Vice President-Research Prof. Xue Qikun. Prof. Xue held a productive meeting with UBC's Vice President Research and International, Prof. Helen Burt, in which they discussed research collaboration and technology transfer. Members of the Tsinghua delegation also met their counterparts from UBC's Faculty of Applied Science to discuss potential collaboration in several Engineering Fields.
On July 12, 2016 UBC welcomed Fudan University President Xu Ningsheng along with his colleagues Prof. Chen Wen (Dean - School of Public Health) and Prof. Zhu Chouwen (Director - Foreign Affairs Office). President Xu and his colleagues met with UBC's Interim President & Vice Chancellor Dr. David Farrar, Vice President Research and International pro tem Prof. Helen Burt, as well as representatives of UBC's School of Population and Public Health and Insititute for Asian Research.

On March 18, 2016 UBC welcomed renowned international educator (& Executive Director of the Association of International Education Administrators) Dr. Darla Deardorff for a session exploring learning outcomes assessment for internationalization. Attendees discussed key principles of quality outcomes assessment as well as ways to get started on assessing internationalization outcomes.
On February 15, 2016 UBC was pleased to host a delegation from the University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane, Australia. The delegation was led by Prof. Monique Skidmore (Deputy Vice Chancellor, International) and included colleagues from UQ's Graduate School and International Office. At UBC, the UQ delegation met with representatives from the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies, the Sauder School of Business, the Office of the Vice President, Research and International, and the Faculty of Applied Science. The visit laid the groundwork for growing the important UBC-UQ relationship in student mobility, research collaboration, and information sharing.
On February 11, 2016 UBC was pleased to host his Excellency Mr. Werner Wnendt, Ambassador of Germany to Canada. Amb. Wnendt met with Prof. John Hepburn (UBC's Vice President, Research and International) and Dr. Adel El Zaïm (Executive Director, International) before giving a lecture to students and faculty in the Institute for European Studies. Amb. Wnendt's lecture was entitled "German Political Approaches towards the Refugee Crisis and European Integration” and he focused on the role that European integration plays in enabling the continent to best address pressing current issues.
On November 18, 2015 UBC was pleased to host a delegation of Colombian & Peruvian universities, led by Global Affairs Canada and the respective Canadian Chambers of Commerce (in each country). Besides discussing UBC's international engagement strategy, the visit centred around programs in UBC's English Language Institute and CIRDI - the Canadian International Resources and Development Institute (located on campus).
On November 1, 2015 UBC was pleased to host a delegation from the University of Hong Kong (HKU), led by President & Vice Chancellor Prof. Peter Mathieson. The delegation toured the joint UBC-HKU facilities in the Marine Drive Residences, including the Simon K.Y. Lee HKU-UBC House, Simon K.Y. Lee HKU-UBC Global Lounge, and the Simon K.Y. Lee Hong Kong Ballroom. Prof. Mathieson also met with UBC Vice President, Research & International Prof. John Hepburn, and discussed ways the strengthen the close relationship between UBC and HKU.
On October 27, 2015 UBC was pleased to host a Belgian government delegation led by Mr. Didiers Reynders, Minister of Foreign & European Affairs. Mr. Reynders spoke to students and faculty about the current process of European integration and challenges presented to this process by both internal and external factors.
On October 22, 2015 UBC was pleased to host a delegation of 12 German universities organized by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The delegation presented study abroad and graduate study opportunities in Germany for current UBC students, as well as connected with faculties and researchers.
UBC was pleased to host a visit by Mr. Frederic Mion, President of Sciences Po on October 13, 2015. Sciences Po is one of UBC's most important partners in Europe, and the two institutions run a highly successful dual-degree program in Arts & Commerce. Mr. Mion and his colleagues met with Executives from UBC's administration, along with present and past exchange students, along with those from the dual degree program.
UBC was pleased to host a visit by His Excellency Dr. Vijavat Isarabhakdi, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand to Canada. Amb. Isarabhakdi met with Dr. Adel El Zaïm (Executive Director, International) and Prof. Kai Ostwald (Co-Director of UBC's Centre for Southeast Asia Research) to discuss UBC's research and teaching engagement in Thailand, as well as the broader Southeast Asia region. Later, Amb. Isarabhakdi also met with students and faculty members at UBC's Institute for Asian Research to discuss Canada-Thai relations as well as current developments regarding the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
UBC was pleased to host a delegation from Tsinghua University, led by Prof. Yang Bin (Provost & Vice President). The delegation met with Prof. Angela Redish (Acting President and Interim Provost & Vice President, Academic), Prof. Rob Boushel (Director, School of Kinesiology), and Dr. Adel El Zaïm (Executive Director, International). The UBC School of Kinesiology signed a Statement of Cooperation with Tsinghua’s Division of Sports Science and Physical Education committing to explore developing graduate degree programs providing advanced academic training for senior sport management personnel for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games. The delegation also toured UBC’s legacy venues from the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics as well as the new Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre.
UBC and the Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) jointly launched the C-C JCBERI at the 5th International Conference on Biorefinery, held at UBC on August 10-12, 2015. UBC and BUCT are the first partners in the Joint Centre, which will grow to encompass researchers and projects at other institutions in both countries. The Canadian team will be led by Dr. Tony Bi, professor in UBC's Department of Chemical and BiologicalEngineering and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.
UBC hosted a delegation from the Brazilian Association of Rectors of State and Municipal Universities (ABRUEM). In conjunction with Universities Canada, the group visited campus and met with numerous faculties and academic programs to discuss best practice and potential collaboration with UBC partners. The day's program highlighted some of UBC's key programs engaging Brazilian students and partner universities, across numerous faculties.
In collaboration with the Mexican Consulate, UBC hosted the first Meeting on Canada-Mexico Collaboration on Higher Education, Innovation and Research. The Meeting brought together academic, government, and private sector stakeholders to discuss ways to better promote educational and research cooperation between both countries.
