Dr. Daniel Coombs appointed head of the Department of Mathematics

Dr. Daniel Coombs has been appointed head of the UBC Department of Mathematics, effective Jan. 1, 2021.

Dr. Coombs obtained his PhD in 2001 from the University of Arizona, went on to hold a postdoctoral position at Los Alamos National Laboratory, and joined UBC in 2003. He is a member of UBC’s Mathematical Biology Group and the Institute of Applied Mathematics. Over the past year, Dr. Coombs and his team have been supporting the province’s efforts to understand and model the spread of Novel Coronavirus. Dr. Coombs has been a frequent media commentator on the pandemic and has been part of an expert team proving advice to Canada’s Chief Science Advisor, Dr. Mona Nemer.
