Deadline extended for Maximizing Impact 2023-24

October 06, 2023

Maximizing Impact is a six-month cohort-based program now entering its fourth year. It is open to all non-tenured early-career researchers/faculty members at the level of Assistant Professor who are within their first three years at UBC. This unique and intentionally designed program provides mentorship and coaching. It engages early-career researchers/faculty in maximizing the impact of their academic endeavours – particularly during these challenging and uncertain times. We focus on helping ECR learn more about how the university operates, their role in faculty positions, and advancing growth, equity, and change. The programme offers workshops and group and individual coaching tailored to participants' needs.

See the 2023/24 cohort page here.

The program, led by Dr. Naznin Virji-Babul, Senior Advisor to the Provost, Women and Gender-Diverse Faculty, UBC Vancouver, and Associate Professor, Department of Physical Therapy, Faculty of Medicine, and Dr. Lisa W. Loutzenheiser, Associate Professor, Faculty of Education, invites all non-tenured faculty members at the level of Assistant Professor who are within their first three years at UBC to take part in a 6-month hybrid online and in-person programme. To meet the needs of the cohort, spots are limited.

The program will focus on the following components:

  1. Networking opportunities for faculty who are at the start of their academic careers.
  2. Monthly events/workshops where participants will join invited speakers to discuss navigating early-career faculty transition to faculty, foster connection to UBC and lead change.
  3. One-on-one and/or group coaching with certified and experienced UBC Leadership Coaches to navigate the complexities associated with the role, explore strengths, uncover the wider system, and set and achieve goals professionally and personally. Supported by UBC Coaching Services, Learning and Talent Development, Human Resources

Planned workshops (November-April) will include a selection of the following:

  • What is coaching and mentoring? How to make the most out of the program.
  • Starting and maintaining a vibrant research program/lab, motivating graduate students
  • Managing family responsibilities (parenthood and aging parents) with the demands of academia
  • Discussion of tenure
  • Work-life balance
