Navigating Uncertainty in the time of COVID-19: A pilot program

January 22, 2021

Note: As of February 4, 2021, we are at capacity for the initial pilot program. We will begin planning for second program for junior faculty this spring, and will announce registration in the summer. We thank everyone for their interest in the program.

As Senior Advisor to the Provost on Women and Gender-Diverse Faculty, I am pleased to announce the launch of a new initiative aimed at women and gender-diverse faculty members in the early stages of their academic career. The pilot program, Maximizing Impact: Navigating Uncertainty and Complexity in the time of COVID-19, aims to engage women and gender-diverse junior faculty in maximizing the impact of their academic endeavours – particularly during this challenging and uncertain time.

Non-tenured women and gender-diverse faculty members, at the level of Assistant Professor, are invited to join a three-month online pilot program. The program will provide networking opportunities; lunch-and-learn sessions with thoughtful and engaging speakers; and access to group and/or 1:1 leadership coaching.

The pilot program has two components:

  1. Monthly online lunch-and-learns, where participants will join invited speakers who will be discussing strategies to navigate the complexities associated with continuing research, managing teaching and the implications for junior faculty for the future.
  2. Leadership coaching provided either as a group and/or one-on-one, for a small cohort (approx. 20 junior faculty members).

The program will start mid-February and continue through the end of April, 2021.

Please email nvb31@mail.ubc.ca by February 5, 2021 to indicate your interest in this new initiative. A short paragraph indicating your goals and how you anticipate this program will support your work/career will help us to plan the program.

In order to provide the best experience, we are limiting participation to 30 individuals for this pilot phase.

With best wishes,

Naznin Virji-Babul
