New search for a Senior Advisor to the Provosts on Academic Freedom

September 05, 2019

A message from Andrew Szeri, Provost and Vice-President, Academic, UBC Vancouver, and Ananya Mukherjee Reed, Provost and Vice-President, Academic, UBC Okanagan

In late spring, we embarked on a search for a new Senior Advisor to the Provosts on Academic Freedom. Given the timing in the academic year, we paused our search over the summer months, but we are now resuming our efforts to fill this important position. The deadline for applications is Monday, September 30

The successful applicant will continue to support, safeguard, and preserve academic freedom and freedom of expression in accordance with UBC’s 1976 Senate Statement on Academic Freedom

Reporting to us, the Senior Advisor will work proactively with members of the university community to ensure that academic freedom and freedom of expression are understood, safeguarded and promoted at UBC. In the course of their work, the Senior Advisor will cultivate relationships across the community, and provide support to both the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses.

The initial appointment is for a two-year term with the possibility of renewal, and will be in the range of a 25 - 50% position. Arrangements will be made with the respective department to support this secondment.

While it is anticipated that the Senior Advisor will be an accomplished UBC tenured professor, applications from candidates in other ranks (such as associate professor) or with other appointment types (such as emeritus professor), who have the requisite experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, will also be considered.

Full details of the position can be found at: https://academic.ubc.ca/sr_advisor_academic_freedom

Applicants should submit their current CV, letter of interest, and the names of three references to ananya.mukherjee@ubc.ca and provost.vpa@ubc.ca.
