December 16, 2019

A message from Andrew Szeri, Provost and Vice-President, Academic, UBC Vancouver:

I am pleased to announce that Prof. Margaret Schabas has been appointed Senior Advisor to the Provost on Academic Freedom, effective January 1, 2020.

Prof. Schabas joined UBC in 2001 as a Professor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts. In addition to serving as Head of the Department of Philosophy between 2004 and 2009, she has been a Peter Wall Distinguished Scholar in Residence and a recipient of a UBC Killam Research Award. Prof. Schabas is a former president of the History of Economics Society and is currently on the editorial board of a dozen journals in philosophy or economics.

In this role, Prof. Schabas will be responsible for working proactively with members of the university community in Vancouver, and supporting institutional efforts to ensure that academic freedom is understood, safeguarded and promoted in accordance with UBC’s 1976 Senate Statement on Academic Freedom.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Neil Guppy for his outstanding contributions in the role over the last three years, as well as the members of the search committee for helping us find such an exceptional candidate.

Please join me in congratulating Prof. Schabas on this appointment.
