Dr. Gage Averill began his term as Provost and Vice-President, Academic, pro tem, at UBC Vancouver on April 4, 2022.
As Provost and Vice-President, Academic, pro tem, Dr. Averill provides leadership for the university’s academic strategy, budgetary and planning processes. The role also includes overseeing UBC’s academic programs and support functions, faculty affairs, enrollment, sustainability and information technology.
He is also a Professor in the School of Music.
Prior to this appointment, Dr. Averill served as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at UBC, 2010-2022. His role as Dean incorporated strategic leadership and overall administration of the faculty (including budget, programs/curriculum), promoting excellence in teaching, research, and scholarly contributions throughout the faculty, appointing and supporting unit heads in attracting and retaining outstanding faculty and staff, as well as playing a leadership role in the university’s fundraising initiatives. The Faculty grew significantly during his term, with many new units, programs, research centres, and facilities; it is also a far more diverse Faculty after the 12 years.
Dr. Averill, a renowned ethnomusicologist whose research in Haitian popular music has earned him several awards, joined UBC in 2010 after holding positions as Vice-Principal, Academic, and Dean for the University of Toronto, Mississauga campus, and also Dean of Music at UofT. Prior to that, he served as Chair of the Department of Music at New York University.
He received his B.A and Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from the University of Washington.
