As the inaugural incumbent of this role completes his term, we are seeking a new Program Director (PD). The PD reports directly to the Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, Teaching and Learning, and is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership to ensure the success and on-going development of the program.
The PD oversees all financial aspects, presenting annual budgets and ensuring the program’s ongoing financial sustainability. This role involves close collaboration with finance and HR offices across faculties, ensuring compliance, transparency, and accountability.
The incumbent supervises the staff, including the student advising staff, conducting annual evaluations and providing merit recommendations. In managing human resources, the Director ensures a supportive environment conducive to professional growth and effective program delivery.
Instructional oversight and planning constitute a significant portion of this role. The Director ensures timely assignment of qualified instructors and Teaching Assistants to all program courses. Supporting faculty, particularly new instructors, and maintaining high standards of teaching as reflected in student and peer feedback on instruction is essential.
The Director is responsible for comprehensive reporting, which includes organizing Steering Committee meetings, faculty meetings, and term-based program committee meetings. Regular reporting to the Steering Committee facilitates informed decision-making and transparent governance.
As the UPN evolves, curriculum development is a key part of this role. The Director supervises curriculum evolution, ensuring alignment with the program's learning outcomes and student goals, in accordance with Senate approval processes.
The Director actively promotes the UPN internally and externally, advocates for student and program needs, and promotes program achievements and opportunities. Collaboration with the UBC Neuroscience Association (UNA) further supports vibrant student engagement.
The position provides an opportunity to build experience in higher education leadership, curriculum development, financial management, and program delivery. It is a fractional secondment for a period of three years with possibility of renewal, with secondment details to be determined in conjunction with the successful applicant and their home Department. It is open to all tenured faculty with a background in an area of neuroscience research and / or instruction.
