Update regarding temporary federal intake cap on international student study permits

January 26, 2024

On January 22, 2024, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada announced a temporary intake cap on the number of international student study permit applications that will be issued for the 2024 and 2025 school years. We know this has caused concern among some of our international students both in Vancouver and the Okanagan.

We’d like to reassure all current UBC students that this announcement does not apply to students who have study permits, nor does it affect study permit renewals. It also does not apply to any international students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees.

UBC values our international students who are an important part of contributing to the university’s academic mission. Our students bring unique and diverse perspectives to the learning environment and campus community. We will continue to work with the federal and provincial governments to ensure that international students continue to consider UBC as a destination of choice.
