ALDP Program events (subpage 2)

The ALDP is a 10-month program that runs from July to April every year. It takes a blended approach, with an asynchronous course and synchronous cohort learning sessions that are offered in-person and online. Program goals are achieved through:

  • Launchpad course (asynchronous)
  • Cohort learning experiences
  • Academic Leadership coaching
  • Alumni-led events

Campus compass: Finding the right resource

Campus Compass is an important (and fun) session in which participants have the opportunity to practice locating the right UBC resource people/units to help them address a number of specific issues that could cross their desks as they take on their new leadership roles. Collaborators from a variety of campus units attend this session and consult with the cohort members as they work on the scenarios, sharing their topical expertise and informing cohort members of the resources available to academic leaders facing these challenges

Budget & finance essentials: Crunching the numbers

Exploring the budget and finance processes at UBC, participants will learn strategic budgetary considerations for proactively and collaboratively considering what questions academic leaders should be asking when reviewing budgets, models for supporting healthy departmental budgets and how budget decisions impact everything from grad-student funding the seasonal hiring.

Navigating conflict: Tools for positive engagement

Academic leaders face conflict and difficult conversations every day. This interactive workshop will prepare participants to de-escalate challenging interpersonal situations, surface underlying issues , and move toward a productive resolution. Our facilitators have years of experience facilitating effective communication and mediating disputes in the post-secondary environment.

Tools for giving and receiving feedback

Giving and receiving feedback requires care and discretion, as in a leadership setting it is nuanced and sometimes political. This hands-on workshop will situate different types of feedback, how to receive and reconcile feedback and practical tools for moving through the feedback loop in ways that strengthen relationships and impact.
