Dr. Laura Moss appointed as Academic Convenor for Congress 2019

December 8, 2017

I am pleased to announce that Dr Laura Moss has been appointed as Academic Convenor for Congress 2019, to be hosted at UBC Point Grey campus from June 1 to June 7, 2019.

Jointly organized by the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences and the host institution, Congress is the largest interdisciplinary conference in Canada, and one of the largest in the world. Congress brings together over 70 academic associations that represent a rich spectrum of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences.

“Circles of Conversation,” the University’s theme for Congress 2019, recognizes a need for conversations among scholars, educators, members of the public, and activists. The conference will showcase creative critical engagements in literature, visual arts, and music. “Circles of Conversation” will focus particular attention on productive scholarly relations with Indigenous communities.

As the Academic Convenor, Dr Moss will play a crucial role in the successful academic planning, multidisciplinary programming, and hosting of the conference. As an ambassador for Congress within UBC, Dr Moss will build support across the institution and amongst faculty, students, and the campus community.

An Associate Professor in the Faculty of Arts, Dr Moss teaches Canadian and African literatures. Her research interests lie in the intersections of art and public policy, and in Canadian literary history. Dr Moss is the Editor of the journal Canadian Literature: A Quarterly of Criticism and Review and has served as Chair of the UBC Canadian Studies Program and Director of the International Canadian Studies Centre. In 2013, Dr. Moss was awarded the UBC Killam Teaching Prize.

This will be Dr Moss’s 15th Congress, and we are delighted to have her representing UBC as part of the organizing team. Please join me in congratulating and welcoming Laura to this role.
