External review of the UBC Sustainability Initiative

November 26, 2018

An external review of the UBC Sustainability Initiative (USI) is being carried out to assist the university as it considers the reappointment of the USI executive director, Dr. James Tansey, whose current term comes to an end on June 30, 2019. The terms of reference for the review can be found here

A review team will visit UBC Vancouver on January 21 - 23, 2019. The members of the review team are:

  • Dr. Charles Redman, Founding Director, School of Sustainability, Arizona State University
  • Dr. Julie Newman, Director, MIT Office of Sustainability, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Dr. Tarah Wright, Professor, Environmental Science Program, Dalhousie University

The review team will meet with faculty members, staff, students, senior administrators, and other individuals and groups that may interact with the USI.

Before the reviewers’ arrival on campus, they will receive documentation on all aspects of the USI’s operation, including the quality of its teaching and scholarship, its contribution to the university’s sustainability goals, its administrative structure and organization, and its internal and external linkages.

Faculty, staff, and students are invited to provide relevant written comments – along with your name and affiliation to UBC – to Dr. Herbert Rosengarten, the review coordinator, at herbert.rosengarten@ubc.ca by Thursday, January 17, 2019.  All comments will be held in strict confidence, and will be forwarded to the members of the review team. The reviewers’ findings will be shared with the Provost and Vice-President, Academic, and the Vice-President, Research and Innovation, and will be of value to the senior administration, the members of the Sustainability Initiative, and the university community.

All are strongly encouraged to participate in this important process – your input is greatly appreciated.
