External Review of the Faculty of Medicine

September 23, 2019

An external review of the Faculty of Medicine is under way. The terms of reference for the review can be found here.

A review team will visit UBC Vancouver on November 4, 5 and 6, 2019. The members of the review team are:

  • Dr. David Brenner, Vice Chancellor, UC San Diego Health Sciences
  • Professor John Iredale, Pro Vice Chancellor (Health and Life Sciences), University of Bristol
  • Dr. Margaret Steele, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University of Newfoundland
  • Dr. L. Trevor Young, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, and Vice Provost, Relations with Health Care Institutions, University of Toronto

The review team will meet with faculty members, staff, students, senior administrators, and other individuals and groups that may interact with the Faculty. Before the reviewers' arrival on campus, they will receive documentation on all aspects of the Faculty's operation, including the quality of its teaching and research, its facilities and resources, its administrative structure and organization, and its internal and external linkages.

All faculty, staff, and students are invited to provide relevant written comments - along with your name and affiliation to UBC - to Carolyn Gotay, review coordinator, at carolyn.gotay@ubc.ca by Thursday, October 10, 2019.  All comments will be held in strict confidence and will be provided to the members of the review team. The reviewers' findings, in the form of a report to the Provost and Vice-President Academic, will be of value to the senior administration, the Faculty of Medicine, and the University as a whole. In particular, the report will be provided as background material for the university in the subsequent consideration of the reappointment of Dean Dermot Kelleher, whose current term comes to an end on August 31, 2020.

All are strongly encouraged to participate in this important process - your input is greatly appreciated.
