Student Diversity Initiative

At UBC, diversity is regarded as a key strength of the institution and is fundamental to achieving excellence in learning, teaching, and research.

Our institutional commitments aim to foster an environment that values inclusivity, mutual respect and engagement with diversity, and that encourages students to interact and be enriched by each other’s differences.

Students who experience diverse perspectives have more cognitive tools to comprehend new ideas, resolve complex problems, and are better prepared for the challenges they may encounter on and off campus.

Recognizing the changing dynamics of our student populations including the increase in the population and complexity of the diversity of our domestic and international students on our campuses, the Board of Governors established the UBC Commitment to Diversity Fund in 2016.

Together with an advisory committee, the Provost and Vice-President Academic, UBC Vancouver, Vice-President, Students, and Associate Vice-President, Equity & Inclusion are developing a strategic framework to allocate the resources provided to support student diversity throughout UBC’s systems and operations. These resources will strategically engage, enhance and embed diversity into our systems and operations. Key stakeholders (students, staff and faculty) will be asked to respond to and address a range of challenges required to attract, retain and support a diverse range of students.
