ALDP Program Details (subpage 1)

ALDP is designed for new Department Heads, Associate Deans and Directors of Centres and Institutes at UBC. Program participants range from those who are stepping into leadership roles for the first time, to those who identify as seasoned academic leaders. Some participants are ready for a new challenge in their career, while others are taking part as they are planning to step into a leadership role. Regardless of one's point of entry, ALDP is designed to support incoming academic leaders during their first year.

Cohort learning

Based on a case-study approach, academic leaders have the opportunity to collaborate with their peers and apply their learning to real-life issues, connect with UBC subject matter experts to address their questions and challenges, and further develop their leadership capacity and skills in a supportive setting.

Asynchronous learning: Our online course Launchpad

Our online Launchpad course is designed to orient participants to the landscape of academic leadership responsibilities and opportunities at UBC, providing them with foundational knowledge for managing effectively, and building capacity toward their leadership goals.

Academic leadership coaching

Coaching is a formal, time-bound collaboration between a certified coach and a coaching client. It is an effective intervention for helping leaders to situate their roles, identify challenges and opportunities, and to build strategies for success. As part of participation in ALDP, participants will have the opportunity to work with an Academic Leadership Coach to support building-on, integrating and implementing learning from the program.

Alumni network

The ALDP Alumni Council, comprised of peers, organizes and facilitates networking and learning events on leadership topics. Academic leaders have the opportunity to build community, continue their leadership development and remain current on emergent leadership topics following their year in the ALDP cohort.

Conflict Community of Practice

In support of practical intervention to manage and mitigate conflict and to build leadership conflict fluency, ALDP offers a Conflict Community of Practice for participants to work through real conflict scenarios in a supportive and transformative environment.

If you are an academic leader at UBC and are interested in accessing our Launchpad course, please contact aldp.program.manager@ubc.ca. Please note that accessing the course is separate from enrolment as an ALDP cohort member.
