Academic Leadership Development Program

The Academic Leadership Development Program (ALDP) is a cohort-based leadership development program co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost and Vice-President, Academic (through the Provost and the Vice-Provost, Academic Affairs) and the Vice-President Human Resources. ALDP is offered to new Department Heads, Program Directors, Associate Deans, and academic leaders in related roles based on recommendations from the Deans within each faculty.

The three key elements to ALDP are workshops (designed with a problem-based learning approach), studio sessions, and leadership coaching.

“ALDP has had a tremendous impact….Knowing about resources available across campus, but also being aware that many of us were facing similar challenges has meant that when a difficult situation arises, I don't feel overwhelmed - and sometimes actually feel energized, as if I'm being given a chance to display leadership.”

The three primary objectives of ALDP are:

  • To enhance and contribute to the effectiveness and personal satisfaction of Heads, Directors, Associate Deans, and other academic leaders at UBC
  • To articulate expectations regarding their roles and responsibilities, and
  • To support the development of leadership capacity at the University, through problem-based learning, coaching support, peer mentoring, and workshops.

In addition, the program aims to:

  • Provide networking opportunities within the cohort and with key resource people at the University,
  • Help participants develop awareness of their leadership styles, and
  • Identify tools and approaches that work for them.

“The cohort model, the engaged and well-prepared team and experts upon who they drew and the importance that is placed on effective leadership contributed to a stellar experience.”

“Being part of a community of leaders outside my own faculty and sharing experiences is an underpinning value to this program.”

Leadership coaching

  • Confidential, one-on-one leadership coaching is available to support cohort members in identifying and achieving their leadership goals. Certified coaches meet with participating cohort members on average six to eight times over the course of the academic year for confidential one hour sessions.

“Coaching helped me to think about the larger picture and reminded me of the goals I set our for undertaking the role. …It gave me time to think through what I was doing, zooming out while at the same time zooming in. I applied several strategies that were offered in our coaching sessions and the ALDP sessions – they go hand in hand nicely!”
